John Deutch, former Deputy Secretary of Defense and Director of Central Intelligence for the Clinton administration has a brilliant plan for Iraq: surrender. NY Times:

The insurgency cannot be overcome easily by either United States military forces or immature Iraqi security forces. Nor would the situation be eased even if, improbably, the United Nations, NATO, our European allies and Japan choose to become seriously involved.

Our best strategy now is a prompt withdrawal plan consisting of clearly defined political, military and economic elements. Politically, the United States should declare its intention to remove its troops and urge the Iraqi government and its neighbors to recognize the common regional interest in allowing Iraq to evolve peacefully and without external intervention. The first Iraqi election under the permanent constitution, planned for Dec. 15, is an appropriate date for beginning the pullout.

Militarily, we should establish a timetable for reducing the scope of operations that has enough flexibility so as not to provide a tactical advantage to insurgents. We should also plan on continuing measures like no-flight zones, border surveillance, training for Iraqi security forces, intelligence collection and maintenance of a regional quick-reaction force.

Economically, we should define what amount of assistance we are prepared to extend to Iraq as long as it stays on a peaceful path. It would be best if this aid was but one facet of a broader set of economic initiatives to benefit Arab states that advance our interests.

Of course, these measures cannot guarantee a secure and democratic Iraq free of external domination. But they could be first steps of a strategy to pursue America's true long-term interests in the Middle East and the Persian Gulf.

What is our true long-term interest in the Middle East if not maintaining secular governments and the nation-state system?

The problem with Deutch is that he fundamentally misunderstands who we are fighting in Iraq. We are not fighting a nationalistic insurgency, we are fighting Islamist terrorists. This is not the same war that was fought against Saddam Hussein. This is a different war.

In the first war we fought Saddam Hussein's secular Baathist armies. In this second war we are fighting Islamists allied with al Qaeda. As one who regularly monitors jihadi activity, I can say with some amount of authority that the vast majority of casualties in Iraq come from Abus Musab al-Zarqawi's al Qaeda in Iraq, The Army of Ansar al-Sunna, The Islamic Army in Iraq, and a few other related groups. None of these groups had any interest in maintaining the Arab Socialism of Hussein. All of them share the goal of ousting the U.S. and toppling the Iraqi government.

We won the first war, but will we win the second? That depends.

Terrorists, despite what many on both the Right and Left believe, are not motivated by hate. These are political movements with political goals. Islam, unlike Christianity, does not distinguish between the political and the secular. The political goals of the Islamists are therefore religously motivated--yet they are concrete political goals all the same. In the case of Islamic extremism, the political goals range from the short-term goal of removing US forces from ALL Muslim lands to the very-long-term goal of a unified world government based on Islamic law.

In our rhetoric we say things like, "If [insert fear, civil liberties, etc. here] changes then the terrorists have already won." No, the terrorists are not interested in outlawing pornography, suspending the writ of habeus corpus, or in changing the routes we drive to work--they are interested in specific policy goals none of which have anything to do with U.S. domestic politics (except in the very-very long-term).

Terrorism, as a tactic, is chosen because terrorists believe those tactics will work.

Goal: U.S. Marines out of Beirut.
Tactic: Suicide car-bombing.
Result: U.S. Marines out of Beirut.
Lesson learned: Terrorism works.

They also believe domestic terrorism can lead to specific policy changes.

Goal: Spain out of Iraq.
Tactic: Terrorism against Spanish civilians.
Result: Spain out of Iraq.
Lesson learned: Terrorism works.

The Islamist forces that we are fighting, though, use other tactics as well as terrorism. In Iraq, for instance, much of what these Islamofascist forces are doing are textbook guerilla tactics. I've watched dozens and dozens of al Qaeda and Islamic Army in Iraq videos of U.S. military vehicles being blown up by roadside bombs, mortar attacks on military positions by small paramilitary groups, and even the occasional shoulder fired anti-aircraft missile. Thus, the terrorists we are fighting use terrorism as a tactic, but also use the tactic of guerilla warfare.

Why would they think they can defeat us in Iraq using geurilla warfare?

Goal: Soviet military out of Afghanistan/imposition of Islamic law.
Tactic: Guerilla warfare.
Result: Soviet military out of Afghanistan/imposition of Islamic law.
Lesson learned: Geurilla warfare works against super-powers.

But Afghanistan was not the only place where this lesson was learned.

Goal: U.S. military out of Somalia.
Tactic: Guerilla warfare.
Result: U.S. military out of Somalia.
Lesson learned: Geurilla warfare works against super-powers.

So, what will happen if we pull-out of Iraq? Can our long-term national interests be met using this tactic?

Goal: U.S. military out of Iraq/imposition of Islamic law.
Tactic: Guerilla warfare.
Result: U.S. military out of Iraq/civil war possibly leading to Islamic law.
Lesson learned: Geurilla warfare works against super-powers.

If we truly wish to win the second war in Iraq, we cannot abandon her to our enemies. If we do then the lesson they will learn is that the U.S. can be beaten. And if the U.S. is beaten in Iraq, then the U.S. can be beaten elsewhere.

That is a lesson we cannot afford our enemies to learn.

One of the ways you can tell an American soldier from his adversary is how they treat children, Muslim children especially. All you have to do is read Mad Dog VinnieÂ’s post from yesterday. And Mike PecharÂ’s post from a couple days ago and you get a pretty good idea.

I found this little gem on ABCNEWS. Been looking for good news and this qualifies. It seems a young boy from Iraq was suffering from heart problems. What did our boys do? Well they helped out of course. I hope this little oneÂ’s recovery goes well and he gets to play and live a long and happy life. Contrast that with the 24 young people murdered by our enemy just to get at one US soldier. Come on you pigs they are kids. They want candy and they are smart enough to have learned that there is nothing to fear from an American GI unless you are his enemy. Unfortunately many learned to fear our enemy that day. Just keep it up, the contrast between us will be what wins the war for civilized people everywhere. Our enemy will be swept into the dust bin of history. Put there by the truth of what they really are, Murderers plain and simple.

“I am very grateful to everybody, to the American troops back in Iraq, to all Houstonians and I'm very grateful to the doctors who did the surgery," the father said nervously”

So I was doing some research on Magdy Mahmoud Elnashar who was nabbed in Egypt today as a 7/7 suspect and I found his e-mail at Leeds University. Since he's now experiencing the pleasures of the Egyptian penal system and is no longer at Leeds University where he just earned his Ph. D. I figure I won't post it. I mean, he probably won't ever get to read it so what possible value could e-mailing the man who's apartment was used to construct the bomb that killed 52 innocents and mamed hundreds more?

Oh, right. There is that.

So, if you think there might be some theraputic value in e-mailing this son-of-a-bitch and telling him just what you think of him, here you go.

In fact, if the fellowship that Elnashar received was anything like fellowships in the US, his status as an Egyptian national would only help him--after all, diversity before all other considerations!

So, all indications are that Elnashar was a good student who had received some amount of recognition at Leeds University. The only sign that he was a terrorist was that he enjoyed talking about his religion. Isn't that odd? A religious man becoming a terrorist?

Yet another update: Looks like Andrew Cochran knows how to do a Google search too.

Mike Pechar, a co-author here, makes this important point at his own blog:

It needs to be noted that Elnasher has been reported to be a chemistry student, a chemistry lecturer, a biochemistry researcher, and a chemistry professor. Right now, it's not really clear what he is, but it has something to do with chemistry.

What bothers me is the possibility that he is a biochemist. If so, and he's found to be a terrorist, there is the likelihood that he may have been working on biological weapons

WASHINGTON (AP) - People in several heavily Muslim countries have lost some of their enthusiasm for Osama bin Laden and for violent acts like suicide bombings, especially in countries where there have been recent terrorist acts, international polling found.

Surveys conducted for the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press looked at attitudes of people living in Indonesia, Jordan Lebanon, Morocco, Pakistan and Turkey, all countries with Muslim majorities, as part of an international survey of 17 countries done this spring.

In Lebanon, the number of people who think the use of suicide bombing and other forms of violence is justified in defense of Islam has dropped from 73 percent in the summer of 2002 to 39 percent now. A decrease in this number also was seen in Morocco, which fell from 40 percent a year ago to 13 percent now, and in Pakistan and Indonesia. In Jordan, the number of people who feel such violence is justified has grown slightly; the number in Turkey remains very low.

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraqi forces thwarted a triple suicide attack on Baghdad's Green Zone government compound on Thursday, killing two bombers before they reached a checkpoint and capturing one alive, a U.S. military spokesman said.

Police guarding the checkpoint spotted what they identified as a suicide bomber driving toward them during the morning rush hour, Brigadier General Donald Alston said. They opened fire, and the bomb went off before reaching the checkpoint.

Two other bombers, strapped with explosives, then ran toward them but were gunned down. One survived and, after an Iraqi explosives expert defused his bomb, was taken into custody.

Crud, I have to get back to work. Discuss amongst yourselves.

Apparently, the terrorists who escaped from the Bagram detention center are now in the southern part of Afghanistan.

From Reuters:

Four Arab al Qaeda militants who escaped from a heavily fortified U.S. detention center in Afghanistan this week reached a Taliban haven safely on Thursday, a spokesman for the guerrilla movement said.

"The Taliban found and recovered four al-Qaeda mujahideen (holy warriors) this morning," Taliban spokesman Abdul Latif Hakimi said from an undisclosed location.

Hakimi, whose information has often proved unreliable, declined to say where the escapees were, but added: "They are far away from Kabul. They are safe and now taking rest."

The Pakistani-based Afghan Islamic Press news agency quoted another, unnamed, Taliban spokesman as saying the men were in the south of the country. "They are alright. They had some bruises to their feet ... they are being given medicines."

Anyway, the escapees have been named and they come from four different countries, Syrian Abdullah Hashimi, Kuwaiti Mahmoud Ahmad Mohammad, Saudi Mahmoud Alfatahni, and Libyan Mohammad Hassan.

In the same report, a member of the Taliban leadership council, Mullah Dadullah, told Al Jazeera television that the group possessed anti-aircraft weapons and was seeking to obtain even more powerful arms.

Would it be possible to get spokesman Hakimi back on the line for a lengthy chat?

Thought I would take a few minutes and open for discussion this item. It seems some in Iran are not taking the elections there lying down. Most people expect that since that election the minimal reforms and freedoms there will be reversed. LetÂ’s not forget that in their society speech can get you killed or imprisoned. Here we pretty much get to speak our minds. There dissent can be deadly.

Dr Demarche has a good post on the fact that not everyone enjoys the freedom to speak that we have. And it don't come cheap as earlier posts today show.

Also Pejman Yousefzadeh apparently an Iranian national who bloggs thanks President Bush for supporting Akbar Ganji.

For those of you out there who hate our President I ask you one thing. Do you really think the islamofacists would allow you to speak such things about the President of Iran should you find yourself there tomorrow? The fact that you can read my speech is a fairly recent development. Not too many years ago all of our speech would have been below the radar. Silenced by the powers that be to keep us in our place. Now it's as easy as clicking post.

[UPDATE 7/15--El Nashar arrested in Egypt]

Two more suspects identified in the London bombings. Add visas given to Middle Eastern professors and graduate students to my list of immigration reforms. One of the suspects is a college instructor, Magdi El-Nashar from Egypt. [UPDATE: Suspect also went to graduate school at North Carolina State. Scroll down for info...] Also, co-author Mike Pechar reveals the identity of London's fourth mass-murder--and he's Jamaican. This means he was not the son of Pakistani immigrants, as the other three were, and that he was a most probably a convert to Islam. I'm thinking a few puffs of the ganja would have been a good thing in this guys case. Never heard of a Rasta terrorist before......

A chemistry instructor at Leeds University has been implicated as the possibe as the mastermind behind the 7/7 bombings, but the fact that the bomb-making materials were found in his apartment puts him squarely at the center of the conspiracy.] The way the article is written, it sounds as if he may have been a graduate student but I'm not sure how the British University system works exactly. A CHEMISTRY lecturer linked to the Leeds bomb factory was being hunted last night by cops trying to trace the mastermind of the 7/7 atrocity.

Egyptian Magdi El-Nashar, 33, rented a flat at 18 Alexandra Grove in the suburb of Burley.

The lecturer — also taking a PhD biochemistry course at Leeds University — vanished days before the London outrage.

He is thought to have returned to Egypt, where al-Qaeda have a strong base.

At least two of the suicide bombers who caused the carnage have been connected to the flat, 200 yards from Leeds Grand mosque.

Forensic experts were searching the house in which the flat stands yesterday — and are thought to have found explosives. Anti-terror cops are also trying to trace ANOTHER suspected prime mover of the London attacks.

POLICE believe they have identified the man who planned the London bombings.

It has also emerged that one of his recruits - Edgware Road bomber Mohammed Sadique Khan - was a teaching assistant in a Leeds primary school.
The leader of the terrorist cell is believed to be in his 30s and of Pakistani origin. He arrived at a British port last month and is understood to have left the country the day before four suicide bombers murdered at least 53 people.

Security sources believe he has been involved in previous terrorist operations and has links with al-Qa'ida followers in the US. It is believed he visited the bombers in Leeds and identified targets. Security chiefs say he is also likely to have schooled his recruits on how to trigger their rucksack bombs almost simultaneously.

Another UPDATE: So, a college professor/grad student (haven't sorted that one out yet--any Brits care to help distinguish?) is at the center of the conspiracy to murder civilians and terrorize London--pretty bad. In a statement Thursday, Leeds University said el-Nashar enrolled in October 2000 to do biochemical research, sponsored by the National Research Center in Cairo, Egypt. It said he earned a doctorate May 6.

"We understand he was seeking a postdoctorate position in the U.K.," the university said. "His visa was updated by the Home Office earlier this year. He has not been seen on the campus since the beginning of July.

Good news from Iraq. It looks like we may have got the man responsible for the murder of Egyptian Ambassador Ihab al-Sherif. That's two al Qaeda cell leaders caught in the last week. Off with their heads!

The U.S. military on Thursday announced the capture of two key members of Iraq's most-feared terror group, including one suspected in the kidnap-slaying of an Egyptian envoy and attacks on senior diplomats from Pakistan and Bahrain.

Khamis Farhan Khalaf Abd al-Fahdawi, known as Abu Seba, was arrested last Saturday following operations in the Ramadi area west of Baghdad, the U.S. military said in a statement.

He was accused of involvement in the abduction and killing of Egypt's top envoy in Iraq and attacks on Pakistani and Bahraini diplomats earlier this month.

"Seba served as a senior lieutenant of al-Qaida in Iraq, and is suspected in attacks against diplomats of Bahrain, Pakistan and the recent murder of Egyptian envoy, Ihab Salah al Din Ahmad al-Sherif," the U.S. statement said. "Al-Qaida ordered the attacks against Arab diplomats in an effort to reduce support for the government of Iraq according to a military spokesman."

Another al-Qaida in Iraq lieutenant, Abdullah Ibrahim Mohammed Hassan al Shadad, or Abu Abdul Aziz, was captured Sunday, the command said. It said Abu Abdul Aziz was a top lieutenant of al-Qaida in Iraq leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi and served as operations officer for the group.

The statement said Abu Abdul Aziz was cooperating with coalition forces.

You ever wonder why moonbats like Farrakhan can keep a national profile? It's because they have corporte sponsorship. Not always directly, but indirectly. It seems that the Jew-hating lunatic spoke at a Jesse Jackson event last year sponsored, in part, by Toyota.
